Spiritual leader Amma Sri Karunamayi will visit Seattle June 30-July 2 for a series of events including spiritual discourse, individual blessings and Saraswati Diksha, for students ages 4-24; a meditation retreat; and a sacred fire ceremony.

A spiritual leader, teacher and the founder of a nonprofit organization, SMVA Trust, that provides education and other relief in remote communities in India, Amma Sri Karunamayi is known to her students as the “divine embodiment of love.”

“It’s an opportunity for people to receive a blessing from an enlightened soul,” Karunamayi student Prudence Harris, a registered nurse who lives in Seattle, explains. “There’s a sense of expanding your own understanding of things, so if there’s been some issues, you just start having insight into things that are going on with you,” Harris continues. “You start opening to awarenesses that you didn’t have prior to arriving.”

Harris’ husband, Dr. Jeff Harris, a naturopathic doctor practicing in the Greenlake neighborhood, agrees.

“For me, I just feel a big oceanic feel of love -- that whatever is going on inside of me that is stressful is now completely loved and treated with the utmost kindness, and often healed,” he says of Amma Sri Karunamayi. “It just feels like you’re completely loved for who you are and the way you are, and to be able to come to a place and have that opportunity is pretty rare.”

The spiritual discourse and individual blessings take place Friday, June 30, and include a talk, as well as individual blessings offered by Karunamayi. It’s free, and both Jeff and Prudence Harris note they enjoy the smaller, more intimate atmosphere at Karunamayi’s events compared to those of other spiritual teachers from India.

“If you hang around, next thing you know, she’s right in front of you and she’s talking to you in a very sweet and intimate way, and drawing all the negativity out of you,” Dr. Harris explains. “I’ve been to see other saints and I like them as well, but one of the things I like about this experience is it’s a smaller group, and with a smaller group, you get more opportunities.”

For Prudence Harris, Karunamayi’s ability to be both direct and compassionate is one of the things she says she admires more.

“One of the things that is always amazing to me about Karunamayi is that she is one of the most powerful truth forces that I’ve ever encountered,” Harris says. “When you sit in her presence, you are awash in this powerful wisdom. She speaks truthfully and does it fearlessly, and to me that is one of the most impressive qualities that she has.”

On Saturday, Karunamayi offers a meditation retreat, and on Sunday, she hosts a sacred fire ceremony. Pre-registration is required for the meditation retreat.
